Today I continued my personal journey through Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire. Armed with a map & a list of the Grandies, Phil chauffeured me from village to village, church to church, graveyard to graveyard in search of the Deller, Elsum & Ibbott families.
While we were able to find a number of churches & their adjoining cemeteries, the older headstones were badly weathered & sadly many of the inscriptions were illegible, so it was impossible to determine who rests where. Unlike my first visit to Williamstown in Victoria, I didn't experience any sense of presence, but it was very satisfying to be able to photograph our ancestral families' places of baptism, worship, marriage & burial grounds.
A timely arrival at Bassingbourn allowed us to meet with the Church Warden, John Simpson. He was very interested in my research & gave me directions to 36 Royston Road, Bassingbourn, once the address of Deller's grocery shop. I recall the Deller/Bassingbourn connection from our family tree, but how the Bassingbourn Dellers are related requires further research.
The building now houses a bridal shop. Owner/proprieter, Karen Forte, was very accommodating, allowing me to photograph the shop & the old sheds that still house the shop fittings & equipment. A borrowed ladder allowed me to see over the fence. She has given me the email address of Carl Deller who still owns 10 acres of vacant land that adjoins her holding. He lives in Canada.

Hi Irene and Phil, you have certainly been busy. I hope the ankles have recovered. Thank you for letting me share your journey to your roots. It is wetting my appetite for our trip in 2016. The photos are fantastic. Hope the weather is being kind to you as well
