This morning we happened upon The Kennedy Homestead at New Ross. It was the home of JFK's Great Grandfather, Patrick Kennedy. Unfortunately, it was closed for maintenance. I managed a photo of the yards only.
The Dunbrody Heritage Centre Irish / American Hall of Fame honours the achievements of Irish / American immigrants who made outstanding contributions to American society. These included the ancestors of JFK, Bill Clinton, Henry Ford, Grace Kelly & Walt Disney.
A tour of the Dunbrody, a replica sailing ship that transported Irish immigrants from New Ross to New York during the potato famine of 1845 to 1850, was an interesting, but emotional experience. There wasn't a dry eye on the ship by the time the renactment of the plight & hardships faced by those leaving Ireland had concluded. The conditions endured by steerage class, for the 50 days of passage, were nothing short of appalling.
Waterford, built on the banks of the River Suir Estuary, is Ireland's oldest city. The historic centre is built on the site of the original ninth century Viking settlement. Waterford has long been synonymous with hand-cut glass. Following the closure of the factory during 2009, crystal is now made off-shore. That which was displayed was mostly beautiful, some garish. Given I am able to buy at better prices in a DJ's sale, I wasn't tempted to part with my euros.
Ardmore, supported by a small coastal community, was built around a monastery established in 400 AD by St Declan, the first missionary to bring Christianity to the area. Given the number of beach shacks & the large caravan park it is a popular holiday destination. The young ladies, who made excellent coffee, confirmed this to be so. There was much activity this afternoon as the community prepared for the Tidy Town competition. We hope their efforts are rewarded.
Yuoghal, on the River Blackwater, is an historic walled town & fishing port. It was granted to Sir Walter Raleigh by Queen Elizabeth I & later sold to the Earl of Cork. With 5 kilometres of sandy beach, it is a popular holiday destination during the summer. I'm not sure just what day that is!
We have arrived Cork. We plan to explore this city on Thursday.
