Unfortunately, wet, blustery weather meant it rained on Her Majesty's Jubilee Parade. A shame given the Nation's enthusiasm for their much loved Monarch & the preparation required for today's celebrations. It was wonderful to have witnessed & shared the occasion with three Brits & a Welshman, albeit on television in the guest house lounge.
Another day of spinning along country lanes. Nature's palette never ceasing to amaze as we travelled through beautiful countryside, pretty villages, historic towns & river valleys dotted with farms, their fields defined by hedge rows. Unfortunately the wet conditions didn't make for good photography.
Our destination was Salcombe, a small town built on steep slopes close to the mouth of Kingsbridge Estuary. The sheltered harbour formed by the estuary meant that Salcombe once prospered as a shipbuilding & sailing port. Today hundreds of pleasure craft crowded the harbour. Not a particularly engaging sight at low tide. We failed to take the first available parking space, which resulted in the parting of the crowds as we made a stop, start crawl through the very narrow main thoroughfare. The park & ride would have been a far better & less embarrassing option.
Tally ho! We were bound for Stokes Gabriel & the narrowest lanes encountered - ever! Reminiscent of a scene from 'Keeping Up Appearances', Mrs Bucket gasped an 'Oh Philip, do be careful dear.' Or something like that!
Dinner at the local pub & a walk through & along the foreshore confirmed, while advertised otherwise, the title Riviera doesn't sit well with Torquay. It's tired & a tad tacky.
